IHL Moot Competitors Guide 2009

ABOUT:

The International Humanitarian Law Moot offers teams of two competitors a chance to move beyond the mundane laws of tort and contract. Whilst drawing on many of the skills learned and honed through more traditional moots it introduces competitors to the new and exciting realm of international humanitarian law.

Unlike the Open Moot, questions will be mooted as if in the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court or the International Court of Justice. This mooting competition also differs in structure and process from the more traditional moots – It contains only two Rounds, and the two best teams with the highest score from either round will compete in the Grand Final. The winner team from this moot will represent Flinders University at the ALSA Conference in July, to be held in Adelaide this year.

Due to the inherently specialised area of law (international humanitarian) the workload is heavier than compared to the Open Moot but the feeling of satisfaction competitors get from nailing a particularly hard question, or articulating a complicated point of law, more than compensates.

The International Humanitarian Moot is open to anyone regardless of whether they’ve studied any international or humanitarian law, though this moot is an advanced competition and as such requires more time and effort than a general law moot. If you’re up for a challenge, want to hone your public speaking skills or are interested in a career in international humanitarian law, this is definitely the competition for you!

REGISTRATION:

Registration for the International Humanitarian Law Moot begins 29th of March, 2010. The moot will be running on a Wednesday morning beginning at 10am. Please refer to the IHL Guide and Rules to gather a greater understanding of the Competition and how the moot will be running.

To register please indicate your availability on a Wednesday morning. The time for the moot is fixed, so there is not the possibility of mooting at an alternative time.
