Negotiation Timekeeper's Guide

One of the best competitions in which to practice achieving the goals of your client, The Lipman Karas Negotiation Competition offers teams of two competitors the opportunity to work with another team of negotiators to achieve the best possible outcome for each of their clients. While this can be difficult when each client has competing goals, it is the role of the negotiators to keep a clear head and to try to solve the issue without needing to resort to litigation.

Competitors must enter in teams of two and will remain in their team throughout the duration of the competition.

Each negotiation session will comprise a 50 minute negotiation (including a 5 minute ‘time out’ per team) and a 5 minute post-evaluation for each team, conducted in the absence of the other team, in which the team reflects on the techniques used, and hypothesises about how they would conduct further negotiations in light of the one that had just passed.

For our fourth year students facing the LLAW4104 Advanced Civil Litigation Negotiation in Weeks 7 and 8 of semester, this competition offers the perfect forum in which to develop their skills.

The winning team will represent Flinders Law School at the National Championships, held at the 2010 Australian Law Students’ Association July Conference.

An information session will be held on Friday 14 August 2009 from 12pm-1pm in the Moot Court.
